Egyptian Ghawazee
The term Ghawazee (meaning "invaders of the heart") most likely originated in reference to the outdoor public dancers and singers of the Nawar, believed to be descendants of the Romani who migrated to rural, southern Egypt in Medieval times.
Saber Dance while Balancing on Wine Glasses - Paintings of the Ghawazee suggest a possible historical precedent for the balancing Saber Dance. Dancers throughout the Middle East are known to add drama to their dance by balancing on or under anything at hand.
Raks Assaya "Cane Dance" - Female dancers in Egypt commonly perform a satirical cane dance meant to parody the martial dance performed by Egyptian men.
